What is this medicine?

ISOTRETINOIN treats severe acne that has not responded to other therapy such as antibiotics.

General information

What may interact with this medicine?

Do not take this medicine with any of the following medications:

  • vitamins and other supplements containing vitamin A

This medicine may also interact with the following medications:

  • alcohol
  • benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or other drying medicines used for acne
  • medicines for seizures
  • orlistat
  • other drugs that make you more sensitive to the sun such as sulfa drugs
  • progestin-only birth control hormones
  • st. john's wort
  • steroid medicines like prednisone or cortisone
  • tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline and tetracycline
  • warfarin

This list may not describe all possible interactions. Give your health care provider a list of all the medicines, herbs, non-prescription drugs, or dietary supplements you use. Also tell them if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs. Some items may interact with your medicine.

Side effects

Do not take Accutane during pregnancy and not pregnant during the course of its use and within a month after you stop taking the drug. Accutane can cause malformations of the fetus. It can also cause miscarriage, premature birth or death of a child. If you become pregnant, stop taking contraceptives or missed menstrual period immediately stop using Accutane and inform your doctor. Some patients have symptoms of depression during treatment or after using Accutane. Immediately tell your doctor if you have any signs of depression. Do not take vitamin supplements containing vitamin A during the treatment with Accutane. This can lead to increased side effects. Do not use waxing hair removal procedures on the skin while taking Accutane and within six months after its termination to avoid the appearance of scars. Avoid being on the sunlight and UV rays while taking Accutane. Accutane can increase skin sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to severe sunburn. Accutane may affect your ability to see at night. Deterioration in night vision may occur suddenly.

Before using Accutane tell your doctor if you have:

1) Individual or hereditary history of mental problems, including depression, suicide, any form of psychosis

2) Diabetes

3) Asthma

4) Cardiovascular disease

5) Osteoporosis

6) Anorexia nervosa

7) High cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood or liver disease.

Where should I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
